A shoulder holster carries the gun under the arm, held by a harness across the back and usually balanced by magazines on the other side. It keeps weight off the belt and puts the gun within easy reach while seated.

When a shoulder rig makes sense
- Long drives, where a belt holster is hard to reach in a seat belt.
- Under a coat in cold weather.
- Larger handguns and hunting revolvers.
Trade-offs
- Needs a cover garment worn at all times.
- The cross draw sweeps the muzzle across others; train with care.
- Harness fit takes adjusting.
